Yesterday, word broke (via Kotaku) that publisher Namco and developer of their upcoming reboot of Splatterhouse, Bottlerocket Entertainment, had went their separate ways. And things weren't looking too happy. According to the sources, Namco simply showed up to the studio on Friday of last week, yanked all development resources and equipment and took the yet-to-be-finished action game in-house to complete it, essentially leaving Bottlerocket up a shit creek without a paddle. Reports indicated that the internal team behind the recently released Afro Samurai game would take the reins until completion, and would even receive full and final development credit. Speculation was that this was Namco simply trying to cut costs by finishing a project in-house, rather than continue to pay an outside studio.

Today, Namco confirmed the rumors, stating that they've decided to finish Splatterhouse internally for unknown reasons.

"We have decided to part ways with BottleRocket Entertainment but we are committed to bringing Splatterhouse to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 later this year. At this time, we are not ready to discuss specific development details about the game and wish BottleRocket the best of luck in their future endeavors."

That's kind of jacked, isn't it? Sources have apparently told Kotaku that Bottlerocket employees were given their final paychecks last week, and that they are shuttering the studio within 3 months time. There is also speculation from unnamed sources that say Bottlerocket were essentially getting lazy and failing to meet deadlines - over and over again - and turning in shoddy work. In reality and if that's the case, Namco may have done a smart thing here, but to let it break into the media like this was an unfortuante circumstance. Could this mean the game will be delayed, it was scheduled to ship very soon? Who knows, but we'll keep you updated.
