It's a funny thing, this LucasArts-developed, Euphoria-powered Indiana Jones game. Everytime I start to forget about it since its reveal in 2006, someone, somewhere manages to bring it back into the spotlight just enough to perk my interest again. Despite what last year's entry in the film series did to me. Insanity. The last time we heard anything, semi-officially, about the title was in September 2008 at the Las Vegas GameStop Manager's eXpo. Rumors on the floor from sources indicated that LucasArts were prepping to finaly reveal the game's first official trailer the following week. And nothing happened. Boo. The game has been the subject of quite a bit of secrecy - for what reason, I do not know. Other than the technologies being used: Euphoria and Digital Molecular Matter (both of which, coincidentally, wound up debuting in GTA IV and The Force Unleashed, respectively, last year), the only thing to keep locked up here would seem to be the storyline. Knowing LucasFilm, that's what they are struggling with. Rumors from back in the Summer - following the massive lay-offs at the studio - claimed that the game was in dire trouble, and that LucasArts would be stopping all internal development after shipping The Force Unleashed. That last part was eventually debunked, or rather, positively spun by a LucasArts representative. But where's Indy? Here we are in the first weeks of 2009, a full 3 years after the game's unveil, and we know absolutely nothing about it. The reason for that could be, according to sources close with the project for some time, is that the game has been canceled. Apparently LucasArts, in the wake of their corporate reorganization, are shifting employees onto other projects, and the team that was behind Indy is either dissolved, or short adequate staffers. Bummer. Though, LucasArts? LucasArts say that's not the case - once again. Speaking to Joystiq, a PR rep. stated: "LucasArts remains absolutely committed to the Indiana Jones franchise. While we are aware that fans have been eagerly awaiting additional information on the upcoming game, they can rest assured that details are forthcoming." Canned or not canned? That is the ($65 million) question. |
